On Monday, a hacker infltrated Twitter's defenses. He compromised nearly 55000 accounts. The passwords and usernames of these accounts were linked on pastebin pages. Luckily for the Twitter users, most of these accounts are spam accounts. Twitter announced that it has been searching for the culprit. The spokes person also stated that 55000 accounts is not a big amount of accounts. Twitter has nearly 140 million accounts registered. Not only that, the documents contain some 20000 duplicate accounts. Also, many of the passwords and usernames simply do not match up. However, for actual users affected, emails have been sent out. They tell the user to change their password. This is bad news for Twitter because in 2009, a court settlement was settled. If Twitter is not able to provide good account security, then twitter will face fines. For now, Twitter has avoided a big accident, but as hackers are getting more advanced, more precautions may be necessary. Twitter cannot suffer another attack ike this.
Twitter is known to be affected by hackers and this is mostly because people access twitter through their phones and they are not protected. Twitter has been around for quite some time and they have been hacked a lot. Twitter should take more action to protect their user's accounts. Twitter has already been sued and there is already talk about them being sued again. Twitter should protect their accounts more.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the point that social networks like Twitter should be more cautious about the hackers and other internet accidents now. Twitter should be more aware of its user's security and privacy issues. Incidents like hacking can really ruin a website's reputation and honesty. Since Twitter has already involved in the situation of large amount of accounts being hacked, it should take faster reaction and better protection than just apologies and soft explanations.
