Hidden Cameras On Agricultural Property May Be Prohibited in Utah
Josh Loftin, Huffington Post, 2/27/12
350 words
House Bill 187 in Utah, which would make it a misdemeanor to film on farms, ranches, and dairies in the state is in the process of being passed by Representative John Mathis. This bill would make it virtually impossible to catch animal cruelty. Many animal activist groups are fighting against this, including PETA, because they think it's wrong to penalize people who uncover animal cruelty. In addition, activist groups think that if the farmers were farming responsibly, they would have nothing to hide, and thus should not pass the bill. Many of the representatives are ranchers themselves, and all support the passing of the bill. Representative Mike Noel, a rancher himself, thinks that out-of-state organizations will have little effect on the process. He said, "Nobody wants to go and slop around in cow manure... And they certainly don't want some jackwagon coming in and taking a picture of them."
Clearly this is a difficult subject. Though bills similar to this in Iowa, Florida and Minnesota have failed, it is apparent that the ranchers of Utah are very serious about the matter. It will take work to get this bill to pass, but even more work to oppose it.

Title: Planetary Exploration hit in Nasa's budget
Author: John Zarrella
Publication: CNN
Date of Publication: Feb 13, 2012 at 4:49 pm
Length of Article: 496 words
Nasa wants to use it's 18$ billion budget to continue the development of a new heavy lift rocket and the Orion capsule for human deep space missions, fully implement the International Space Station as a science laboratory, and fund the continued work on the James Webb Telescope. Even though it seems that these developments are well funded, the work on James Webb Telescope is already about $6 billion dollars over budget and years delayed. Also Nasa's Planetary Exploration would fall by $300 million due to budget cuts while the mars exploration is getting a 226$ million cut. The science community believe this is a bad idea because of the fact that Nasa would be giving up the biggest tradition of great mission exploring. According to the budget it will be another four years before commercial companies will be ready to start flying astronauts to the Space Station. With this kind of spending Nasa will be on a very tight budget in order to accomplish these things.

Author: Tom Cohen
Publication Name: CNN
Date of Publication: 2/13/12
Length of Article: 1054 words
This article is about President Barack Obama’s proposal of a $3.8 trillion budget. He plans to use the budget by splitting it according to the needs of each government branch. For example, $30 billion will be allocated to modernize schools and $30 billion to pay for school staff. The proposed budget will raise taxes on the wealthy by $1.5 trillion. The proposed reason for the budget is that national government spending is already cut back, but there still needs to be certain amounts of investment and spending to improve conditions. The president will be formally proposing the 2013 budget in Washington D.C. later this month.
Washington & New Jersey-Same Sex Marriage
Written: Tom Watkins
Published: February 13, 2012
The topic of same sex marriage has been a very controversial topic and heated debate topic for many years. More and more states in the U.S. are allowing gay and lesbian couples to get married then ever before. On February 13, 2012, the Washington state governor signed the bill legalizing same sex marriage, along with the New Jersey state Senate voting 24-16 in favor of a similar bill. The New Jersey bill will now go to the Assembly and is scheduled to be voted on Thursday. New Jersey governor, Chris Gregoire's signature to legislation legalizing same-sex marriage, added New Jersey to the list of states that includes Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Iowa, New York and the District of Columbia. Gregoire reassured churches that they do not have to perform same-sex marriage if they wish not to do so. The trend among Americans seems to be moving toward acceptance of same sex marriage. A CNN/ORC poll taken in September found that 53% of respondents agreed that same sex marriages should be allowed. The poll showed Democrats favoring same-sex marriage by 67% to 31%. 30% of Republicans said they favored recognizing same-sex marriage as valid.

Facebook's Zuckerberg may face $2 billion tax bill

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of the Menlo Park company, Facebook, is destined to become a billionaire when his company goes public in the near future. Anytime somebody makes a profit in business he is responsible for paying a tax to the US Government on that profit. Accountants are estimating that 27 year old Zuckerberg's tax bill could reach as much as $2 billion. He now owns almost 414 million shares of Facebook., and holds options to buy 120 million more shares at 6 cents per share. If Zuckerberg uses the options to buy more shares, he must pay tax on the difference between the 6 cents he will pay per share and the market value of the stock on the day he buys the shares. Market analysts are expecting the market value to be as much as $40 per share making Zuckerberg's options valued at $5 billion.
Zuckerberg lives in California which requires 10.3% income tax, and the top federal income tax rate is 35%, so the tax Zuckerberg might owe could be between $1.5 billion to $2 billion. Facebook's CEO has never been totally willing to give up control of his company so he's only willing to sell as much of his stock as he needs to pay the tax bill.
It is possible that Mark Zuckerberg may pay the highest income tax bill ever in the U.S. It's amazing that someone as young as he is, is dealing with such astronomical sums of money. He will definitely help the economies of California and the U.S. if he does indeed pay such high taxes.

Obama to Propose Community College Aid

Title: Obama to Propose Community College Aid
Author: Tamar Lewin
Publication: New York Times
Date of Publication: 2/13
Article Length: 335 words
President Obama is to propose a $8 billion Fund for Community College Aid. The fund plan will still need Congress's approval to pass. The money will be used to strengthen partnerships between community colleges and businesses to train workers in fields like health care, transportation and advanced manufacturing. Obama had previously called for a national commitment to help create an economy that would be built to last. He planned to train two million workers with skills that would lead directly to a job.
The new fund will support community college-based training programs that train to meet the needs of employers in high-growth sectors, teach the latest certified training and skills, and invest in on-the-job training opportunities. The fund will support paid internships for low-income community college students. These internships will allow them to earn credit for work-based learning in college and gain relevant employment experience. Under the proposal, states would also be able to seek money from the federal government to support employer efforts to improve the skills of their workforce. The fund would provide support for regional or national industry sectors to identify pressing workforce needs and develop solutions like the standardization of industry certifications, development of new training technologies and collaborations with industry employers to define and describe how skills can translate to career pathways. As with any large sum of money spent by the government, many are skeptical of how effectively it will create new jobs. They raise concerns over how much the money helps the students and how much it will go into the pockets of the employers. They question if the training programs the money goes to might have been created by employers anyway, without any government money.
In conclusion, Obama proposes Community College Aid to increase the marketability of US workers in our economy. He plans to increase spending for internships and good employment experience. This aid will be focused at low income students, but some question who will really benefit from the aid.
In my opinion, this is a step in the right direction. President Obama's choice to use education as a tool to improve America's economy is a good idea, but education spending must be done correctly, which I think Obama is doing well. This plan seems well thought out to me and I believe we should see positive effects if it goes through.

Struggling Cities Turn to a Crop for Cash by Michael Cooper
New York Times, February 11, 2012
3 pages
The declining economy has caused many states to resort to drastic measures in order to balance their budgets. Struggling cites like Oakland have gone to such extents as shutting off a third of streetlights just to save some money. However, they still have to find other sources to raise their revenues. Recently, these cities have turned to increasing medical marijuana taxes. From raising taxes several times last year, Oakland already made $1.4 million and plan on doubling the dispensaries it licenses from 4 to 8. Other cities like Colorado Springs and Denver have collected from $700,000 to $3.4 million from the medical marijuana industry. Though this cash crop is a small source, it is growing and slowly catching onto more cities.

Court Strikes Down Ban on Gay Marriage in California Author: Adam Nagourney
The New York Times February 7, 2012

This article discusses how in 2008 Proposition 8 stated that marriage was only for males and females, then Judge Walker from San Francisco stated it was, unconstitutional, unlawful and clear discrimination. Later it was discovered that he himself was gay therefore this this was appealed. The same decision came out of that appealing process and it was decided that Proposition 8 was indeed unconstitutional. Now it is going to go further to federal court.
If federal court says it is a matter that the state should resolve on its own, they gay marriage will be allowed in the state of California. However, this is a long process that can take a very long time.
Personally I feel that this topic should be taken very seriously and i admire the gay community for being so active (the way they should be) and fighting for the rights they truly deserve and are so basic and crucial in order to conduct a normal healthy lifestyle in a free country.
Education Gap Grows Between Rich and Poor, Studies Say

Length of Article: (1,190Words/2Pages)
Recently, there have been studies for gaps that are forming about education between the rich and the poor.
From the recent published scholarship, it has been showing that the gap has been growing wider between the rich and poor over time. Overtime, it has been showing that there has been high percentage of students from high income family completing college compared to students from low income family. Most common reasoning behind this creation of huge gap is that parents with high income invest more money on their children. The parents would invest a lot of money on their children, such as sports, tutors, and many other after school activities. This wasn't the only problem, another problem has been occurring such as cultural divide. According to studies, educated people tend to marry other educated people. Another type of results found after study was that children below age of 6 from high income family spends more time out of home and instead at places at day care centers. Also, meaning kids from high income family below age of 6 tend to have high activity hours then kids from low income. Overall, the gaps can continue to get bigger as the economy struggles.
Free Birth Control (Civil Rights)
As a component to Obama’s Obama Care, free birth control is to be provided by an employer to all his or her employees. More recently, religious institutions have been objecting to this law because they feel that the distribution of free birth control promotes sex out of wedlock and for other purposes then to produce children. Due to a desire to harsh religious leaders’ criticism and please the more conservative states Obama will be allowing Catholic institutions to abstain from this rule. A law for free birth control is derived from a modification to a Health and Human Service Department rule, allowing an outlet of free birth control through an employer’s insurance company. Although this section of Obama Care is frowned upon by some religious institutions it is widely praised and accepted by women’s rights movements, California democrats and even some other religious institutions. At the California Democratic Convention held this year in San Diego, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was quoted as acclaiming president Obama for “showing leadership in a very unifying way” and “for his ongoing commitment to women’s health.” Those who are most pleased with riding the religious institutions of free birth control laws are Timothy Dolan head of the U.S. Conference of Bishops and Archbishop George Niederauer. At the same time, other catholics which are pro women’s rights such as Catholics for Choice are disappointed with Obama’s backdown. It is currently disputed widely as to whether or not the Catholic church should be focusing its forceful efforts on such a topic with poll questionnaires like those of Fox News circulating around the country. The Catholic church’s biggest “reason” for not allowing free birth control through their leaders is that the birth control will not actually be covered by the insurance and the cost will go to the church. In the case of California and 28 other states of America, this birth control law has already been in place since 2001 and its effects have been less then noticeable on the church.
In conclusion, it would appear that while democrats such as Nancy Pelosi, sane people, and feminists seem to be fully supportive of free birth control. The sect of religious organizations that oppose this law seem to give other religious organizations a bad name. Several more liberal and women concerned churches are fully supportive of the law and disagree vastly with the opinions of the ignorant Catholic bishops.
I see nothing wrong with the distribution of free birth control through employers. Its affordable, as it doesn’t cost the employer any money, it could control population size and most importantly, free birth control gives a woman the freedom she absolutely deserves to choose when and who with she would like to start her family. It is absolutely a woman's right to determine her own future just like it is a man's right to determine his. Obama’s decision to make birth control free is a wise one.

"Study Explores Electrical Stimulation as an Aid to Memory" by Benedict Carey
New York Times Feb. 8, 2012
820 words
Dr. Itzhak Fried, Nanthia Suthana, Roy Mukamel and a number of other scientists at U.C.L.A. are attempting to improve memory in Alzheimer's and severe epilepsy patients. They are using low doses of electrical stimulation to the entorhinal cortex, sent through electrodes inserted into the brain. On February 2, the tested patience were put through a driving game that tested spacial memory, being stimulated with the low doses during three of the six trips they had to make as a taxi driver in the virtual city. Later, they were told to drive back to the three "stimulated" destinations. The study showed that improvement ranged from 40 to 90 percent better than the non-stimulated areas. The study also showed that the electrical doses improved theta waves, a global rhythm that sends neurons and aid memory.
The study is not yet conclusive, with only 6 people being tested with the new theory. If research proceeds, this may be the ultimate treatment for neurological diseases. The next step in the process is finding the best structure of stimulation and the best way to evaluate it.
Occupy Oakland Reporters Arrested

Journalists -- Myself Included -- Swept Up in Mass Arrest at Occupy Oakland
Mother Jones -- Gavin Aronsen -- Jan 29. 2012

The occupy movement has been gaining traction all over the nation. The participants of this movement are voicing their distraught over the extreme division of wealth in this country. Demonstrations have been staged all over the country, starting on Wall street, and have moved all across to the west coast. Recently in Oakland many demonstrations have ended with violence and mass arrests. On January 28, one particular demonstration was cut short by local police. Although theoretically demonstrators should have the right to peacefully assemble and display their opinions, police use loopholes to rationalize arrests. If one of the demonstrators turns violent, then everyone is considered dangerous. If the police issue an order to disperse (without warrant mind you) they will later make arrests because the demonstrators didn't follow the officer's orders. A group of protesters in Oakland was put under these circumstances late that Saturday evening, the police started zip tying everyone. A few of the people present, however, were protected from arrest by law. They were reporters, and are protected under a law which states that news persons at the state of a protest may not be arrested for trying to ascertain their story or being there. Even after their reporter badges (issued by the police department) were shown, they were still arrested. This is an irrefutably irresponsible act perpetrated by the peace officers. Some officers mentioned to the reporters that the arrest was ultimately for their own good, much to the dismay of the reporters it may have been, but that does not give the police officers the right to arrest. It's bad enough that the protester's right to assemble is being restricted, but now the reporter's right to free speech is also under attack.

America's Darwin Problem
Current Event Posting #1
Technology/Science
Huffington Post by Kenneth R. Miller
2/10/12
According to a national poll taken, less than 40 percent of Americans believe in evolution and in another poll 40 percent thought humans developed from an earlier species of animals. The disbelief in Darwinism is said to be caused by a majority of the members of the major political parties who reject the idea. It is only to be understood by biologists and those who have studied and accepted biology such as active students. Today, anti-evolutionism matters because it has become a great advancement in a genuine anti-science movement. This year, an anti-evolution bill which was already passed by the Indiana State House of Representatives is still waiting for action in the State Senate. This Darwin problem matters because in the author's point of view it threatens the future of American scientific leadership and also constricts the way we all view the scientific world.
This article brings back many similar issues and opinions as we saw in the Scopes Trial. It is obviously an extremely controversial subject in which many states to this day have laws about whether or not to teach/accept evolution. Considering religious views, it is evident that many people just do not want to accept these teachings.

Prop 8 Overturned
Civil Rights
The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court ruled over Proposition 8, and its merit in California a couple of weeks ago. It was a three panel judge tried in San Francisco, presiding on whether Prop 8 was unconstitutional or not. The panel ruled 2-1 in favor of removing the ban on gay marriage, ruling it unconstitutional because it "singled out a minority" with no real basis. They said that the opposing side is allowed to appeal before the ban on Prop 8 will be carried out. This means that gay couples still cannot marry until the Supreme Court takes a look at it. Gay marriage is allowed in only six states: New York, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts. If gay marriage is allowed in California, then there will be seven states with gay marriage legal, and might start another storm of states wanting the freedom of gay marriage. This is very controversial in this state, because voters did choose that gay marriage was not acceptable. On the other side, gays and supporters were overjoyed with the news. It was a huge step closer to gaining their rights.
In my opinion, I think that it is important for everyone in California to have rights awarded, no matter your gender, sexual orientation, race, or any other stereotypical basis people have to discriminate against. I think it's wrong to restrict happiness to a certain number of people, just because they are different. Just because that they like the same gender, doesn't mean it's okay to ban marriage on anyone.

Yucca Mountain Nuclear Project - Liana - Current Event #1

Huffington Post

1000+ Words, 1 Page
A panel, known as the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future, created by President Obama to deal with the nation's increasing amount of nuclear waste, has stated that a replacement site for the failed Yucca Mountain Project in Nevada (which cost 15 million dollars) must be found. The purpose of the Yucca Mountain Project was to have a mass site for the dumping of nuclear waste, and the Blue Ribbon Commission is again seeing the need for this. The Project was called to a halt in 2OO9 by the Obama Administration. The new report issued by the Commission is considered more sustainable than previous nuclear plans, and is in interest of immediate efforts to create at least on disposal facility for long-term management of nuclear waste within a willing host community (other states, tribes, and counties have been unwilling thus far) within the space of the next ten years.
It has been suggested that finding a suitable, permanent burial site for the nation's nuclear waste could take up to 1OO years, so in the meantime a storage facility is also being sought. This improvement on previous nuclear waste plans is coming at a good time for Americans, who received a wake-up call after the nuclear incident in the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear complex of Japan in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami.
Personally, I am of the opinion that we do need a change in our nuclear policy, especially to gather the nuclear waste strewn across the country, which jeopardizes various communities. Action should be taken quickly to locate a place in which waste can be stored, away from people, without damaging the surrounding environment. Changes in nuclear policy are warranted, primarily for safety interests of Americans, and though a plan of execution has not yet been laid, the release by the Blue Ribbon Commission is a promising step.
