In Olympia, Washington Governor Chris Gregoire signed into law a measure that legalizes same-sex/gay marriage, making Washington the 7th state in the nation to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.
gay rights supporters surrounded Gregoire as she signed the bill. She said "I'm proud our same-sex couples will no longer be treated as separate but equal,"
The law takes effect on June 7, but multiple opponents already are preparing to fight.
They plan to file a referendum challenge on Monday afternoon that could put the law on hold. If they get enough signatures it could change the out come during the November vote. As well as an initiative was filed at the beginning of the session that could lead to the new law being overturned.
While gay marriage supporters say that they are ready to fight for gay rights. For now they are celebrating this big moment in history.
A Seattle Democrat, Ed Murray, who is gay and supports gay rights, told the  cheering crowd: "My friends, welcome to the other side of the rainbow. No matter what the future holds, nothing will take this moment in history away from us."
So while there are some set backs to this law and there are people ready to fight against the right of gays. This moment in history will be remembered in Washington and is being celebrated. Even if the law doesn’t pass, America is still close to changing the face of history. And I believe this is a fight that will never end until its set right.
